The start of a new year is the perfect time to change your ways – and lots of people choose January 1 as the date to alter one aspect of their life that they are not happy with.

Some people choose to improve the way they exercise, while others take it as the time to go looking for a new job and follow their dreams.

There are some, meanwhile, who think that one way of improving happiness in life is through a change in their diet.

This is where the so-called ‘Veganuary’ comes in, but what is it and how did it start?

Veganuary was launched in the UK in 2014 and aims to promote a vegan lifestyle for the first month of the year by encouraging people to take part in a plant-based diet.

Vegans believe that all creatures have the right to life and freedom and do not indulge in the use of animal products.

This changes what they eat and wear and also includes saying no to animal products produced even when an animal is not killed for its use, such as dairy products like milk and cheese.

There are health benefits to the vegan lifestyle and it has been found to help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease.

However, some are concerned that the diet does not provide enough of the vitamin B12. B12 helps prevent nerve damage and can be found in products like dairy, meat, fish and eggs.

Janet Cade, of the Nutritional Epidemiology Group, School of Food Science and Nutrition, told BBC Good Food : “A B12 deficiency can lead to neurological symptoms such as numbness, and it’s irreversible if the deficiency is present for too long.”
