Steven Gerrard has emerged as the red-hot favourite to take over as Aston Villa manager, with reports in Scotland and England suggesting a compensation package is being discussed with his current club Rangers.
iverpool legend Gerrard has made a big impression in his first managerial posting at Rangers, winning the Scottish Premiership last season and ending Celtic’s hopes of a tenth successive league title.
Now it appears he is being tempted by the lure of a return to England, with Villa eager to put Gerrard in place after the sacking of Dean Smith.
Sources at Villa have refused to comment on suggestions that they are close to confirming Gerrard as the club’s new manager, yet the refusal to deny the story from Rangers and the Premier League club appear to confirm a deal is close.
Gerrard is a close friend of Villa CEO Christian Purslow following their time together at Liverpool when Purslow was managing director and the move has been given an endorsement by one of Gerrard’s biggest friends in the game.
Jamie Carragher enjoyed some memorable moments with Gerrard at Liverpool and he suggests a move to Villa now could be a perfect step in the career of the former England captain, although it is laced with peril.
“I think Aston Villa as a club would be a great move for Steven Gerrard, but the situation he finds himself in right now is that he took the title away from Celtic last season, and he’s in a great position to win it again,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“I think in a perfect world you’d want to stay at Rangers to the end of the season and come away from there with two titles.
“If he got offered the Aston Villa job, I don’t think there’d be many jobs in the Premier League which he would get offered better than that. People talk about Liverpool, and that might be another two or three years with Jurgen Klopp but you’re not going to get any better jobs, so it would be a decision for him.
“But, in a perfect world, I think Steven Gerrard wants to come away from Rangers with another couple of trophies.”
Gerrard has made no secret of his desire to take over as Liverpool manager at some stage in his story and he would need to succeed at Villa is that dream as to become a reality.
