Pre-Olympics, China is unmoved by global opinion

The Beijing Winter Olympics are only weeks away and China has been forced on the defensive by a diplomatic boycott called by the US, UK, Australia and other western countries.

There had been pressure for Western governments to announce a boycott for months over the Chinese party-state’s treatment of the Uighurs and other ethnic minorities in Xinjiang, as human rights lawyers and individuals dared to speak out against the government.

The push gained new momentum after the disappearance of Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai following her allegations of sexual assault against a former top Politburo official. The Women’s Tennis Association suspended all of its tournaments in China – the strongest stance yet against China by a sporting organization that relies heavily on the Chinese market.
