Relegation-threatened Newcastle are stepping up their January transfer window plans after reportedly settling on a five-man target list.

The Magpies are second bottom of the Premier League having taken 15 games to win their first match of the season.

It will not require a Great Escape for Newcastle to secure survival this season, with Eddie Howe’s men only three points from Watford, who occupy the final safe position.

But having recently been taken over by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the new owners are expected to attempt to make a splash in the transfer market.

While no Director of Football has yet been appointed, following former Chelsea executive Michael Emenalo’s decision to turn them down, Newcastle are still pressing ahead with their planning.

Newcastle are reportedly eyeing a move for Mohamed Elneny

The winter window will open in just three weeks and with only a month to do business, clubs will need to move fast to secure their targets.

Despite the Magpies’ troubling league position, thanks to their Saudi cash, they are aiming high with their targets.

According to the Daily Mail, head of recruitment Steve Nickson has been leading the planning in the absence of a Director of Football.

And a meeting was held last week to give Nickson and boss Howe the chance to present their January shortlist.

It is reported that this shortlist comprises five players – Arsenal ’s Mohamed Elneny, Bournemouth ’s Lloyd Kelly, Tottenham ’s Joe Rodon, Lille’s Sven Botman and German international Matthias Ginter.

Elneny has found it hard to break into Mikel Arteta’s plans at the Gunners this season, though surprisingly started their defeat to Manchester United last week.

He is out of contract at the Emirates Stadium at the end of this season, though it has been widely reported that Arsenal have been considering terminating his deal early.

The Egyptian will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January, though Arsenal could of course sell him to Newcastle instead.

Understandably, much of Howe’s focus is on boosting his defence, with only Norwich having conceded more goals than his side this season.

Kelly is the first of four central defenders on the shortlist, having been signed by Howe for Bournemouth in 2019.

He remains a key player for the Cherries, captaining the Championship promotion favourites for much of the season, with the Mail claiming Liverpool are also eyeing a move for him.

The Reds have also been interested in Botman, making a move from Newcastle for the Dutchman ambitious but unlikely.

Rodon meanwhile has struggled to convince at Spurs, making only one Premier League appearance this season, making a January move possible as Antonio Conte looks to boost his transfer funds.

The final man on the list is Ginter, who is out of contract at Borussia Monchengladbach at the end of the season, increasing the possibility of a cut-price deal in January.
