Face masks Ireland: NPHET meeting with Government could be its final one as mask rules set to change

NPHET is set to meet with the Government today for what could be the final time.

At the meeting today, it’s expected that the Government will be given the green light to lift the mask mandate currently in place for public transport and retail environments.

With almost all restrictions set to be lifted, it is expected there will be no further need for NPHET in its current form although the body may be retained in some capacity.

Minister for the Environment, Eamon Ryan hopes the requirements for mask-wearing in schools, public settings and transport can be removed “straight away”,

Minister Ryan said: “My view is that we should start immediately to remove requirements in school. I have the same view for retail and public transport.”

It’s expected that the mandate will be replaced by Government guidance urging people to continue to wear masks but it won’t be a legal requirement to do so.

Masks are still to be required in healthcare settings.
