Two of Drogheda United’s leading youngsters, Darragh Markey and Luke Heeney, have signed new deals with the Boynesiders ahead of the 2022 season.
The Boynesiders have beaten away competition for the talented pair as new manager Kevin Doherty looks to build on last season’s impressive seventh-place finish.
24-year-old Markey joined Drogs at the beginning of last season from St Patrick’s Athletic after progressing through the youth ranks at Richmond Park.
The former St Kevin’s Boys youth made 36 appearances in all competitions and scored three goals, including two in vital wins over Finn Harps and Longford Town.
“I’m delighted to sign back with a great club and a great group,” Markey said.
“Last year was one of my most enjoyable years to date, and hopefully we can build from the strong core we formed last year with the help from Kevin and his new management team.”
Meathman Heeney has signed on for a fourth season in claret and blue after also coming through the Athletic’s youth system.
The 22-year-old made 30 appearances for Drogheda last season, and scored a penalty as the Boynesiders lost out in a shoot-out to Derry City in the FAI Cup.
“I’m delighted to be back on board for another year. I love it here and as soon as Kev got in contact with me to sign back, I didn’t have to think twice,” Heeney said.
