Airthings View Plus review: effective monitor to help keep air pollution at bay in your home – Mark Kavanagh

Airthings View Plus is an incredibly powerful and informative monitor for the air quality in your home.

Having a device like this helps you pick up on any issues before they become actual problems.

View Plus tracks radon (a naturally-occurring radioactive gas), PM 2.5 (particulate matter such as dust and pollen), CO2 (carbon dioxide) and airborne chemicals known as VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

It will also track humidity, temperature and air pressure.

PM can irritate your lungs and agitate conditions like asthma, while VOCs can make you cough, itch and cause serious long-term health effects.

But radon gas is potentially the most deadly – it is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.

The unit is completely wireless, battery-powered and WiFi-enabled.

It breaks everything down into easy-to-understand data which you can view in the accompanying smartphone app.

This gives you a deep insight into the environment in your home or office.

You can enable or disable notifications for each of the pollutants. These alerts are sent direct to your smartphone.

It’s worth noting that the air in your house can be up to five times more polluted than the fresh air outdoors.

Design and build

The design of the View Plus is similar to the size of a smart thermostat and can be easily mounted on the wall.

The oval-shaped, matte white, unit can also sit on a flat surface such as a worktop.

On the front of the device is a 2.9in monochrome LCD display that shows two readings (of your choice) at a time.

The display is not backlit so it’s hard to see in the dark.

There are no physical buttons on the View Plus.

Instead, it has a built-in motion sensor and if you wave your hand in front of it, you are shown a quick preview of your current overall status.

You will be alerted to anything out of the ordinary, such as high levels of PM, Radon and VOCs.

The thresholds for alerts are set automatically and cannot be customised.

There is also a small LED that indicates if air quality is good (green), fair (yellow) or poor (red).

Because the unit has WiFi connectivity, all of the readings are stored in the cloud and accessible via the smartphone app or web dashboard.

View Plus supports Amazon Alexa.

The device can last two years on six AA batteries. You can power it with a USB-C cable too. There is one included but there is no charging brick.

If monitoring the air quality in your home is important to you, Airthings View Plus is one of the most effective ways to do so.

It is a really simple device to set up and install.

It delivers seven different real-time air quality measurements accurately and alerts you to any potential issues quickly.
